Current Research Projects
Due to ongoing unmitigated anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the world is experiencing global warming. In addition to the reduction of CO2 emissions, Negative Emission Technologies (NETs) are required to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. A very promising NET is enhancing the natural process of weathering as well as the associated process of (ocean) alkalinity enhancement ((O)AE), where ground minerals (e.g., olivine, carbonate, basalt) are spread over various habitats (marine, terrestrial) to enhance the flux of CO2 from the atmosphere to the soil/ocean and achieve subsequent burial.
My current research includes biogeochemical as well as socio-economic aspects in order to assess the potential and risks of marine NETs. The aim is to integrate biogeochemical observation into an integrated assessment model, providing initial insights on the role of OAE for climate policy. We also aim to chart the various open research questions for example with respect to transnational (pollution) impacts or the logistical supply chain and to supplement the numerical derivation of optimal climate policies with a scenario-based investigation of OAE on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
