Class 12 of the Louise-Otto-Peters-school visits the MIE labs

On Monday the 2^nd of December, MIE welcomed class 12 of the Louise-Otto-Peters-school from Leipzig to the molecular lab. The students visited the MIE labs despite their day off and got an insight in molecular genetic techniques by extracting DNA, performing a PCR procedure and running a gel electrophoresis.

Two groups identified nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) infestations in field mustard roots (Brassica rapa) and tomato roots (Solanum lycopersicum). Three other groups looked at the presence of endosymbionts such as Rickettsia, Wolbachia or Sodalis in lacewings (Chrysoperla carnea) and cabbage root flies (Delia radicum). Thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of Frau Starke and all students the day was a great success!
