A GEO BON working group, lead by Prof. Andrew K. Skidmore of the University of Twente and including
Prof. Henrique M. Pereira from iDiv, has just published a Comment in Nature proposing a plan to identify Essential Biodiversity Variables for remote sensing.
Under the auspices of
GEO BON (Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network), conservation scientists are collaborating with space agencies, such as NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), to improve the use of satellite data to track and fight global biodiversity loss. iDiv currently hosts the GEO BON secretariat, and this article is the result of a workshop organised earlier this year in Leipzig dedicated to the development of the Essential Biodiversity Variables framework for global monitoring of biodiversity change.
