Meeting of DAAD scholars focused on biodiversity

Leipzig. How can we conserve and use biological diversity? This question was discussed by more than 500 students from more than 96 countries during the meeting of scholars of the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) DAAD, which took place at the Leipzig University from 20 to 22 May 2016. DAAD vice president Prof. Joybrato Mukherjee and the rector of the Leipzig University, Prof. Beate A. Schücking, welcomed the audience. The opening lecture on Friday was given by the managing director of iDiv, Prof. Christian Wirth, and was entitled ‘Biodiversity: What we lose when it disappears’. On Saturday, more lectures on biodiversity were presented by iDiv members Prof. Christian Wilhelm and Prof. Martin Schlegel as well as by Prof. Nico Eisenhauer, head of an iDiv research group. Apart from the professors of the Leipzig University, also DAAD scholars gave insights into their research. For example, scholarship holders from Mexico, Syria, Sudan or Nigeria talked about interrelationships of biodiversity, climate change, and health.Read more in German
