Nineteen young researchers from five continents got together in Leipzig from 19 to 25 July 2016 for the 2
nd iDiv Summer School to learn about biodiversity synthesis and integration. Together with experienced researchers from iDiv and UFZ they worked “hands-on” in four specifically for the summer school designed research projects. The groups will continue their collaboration after the course aiming at a publication. Daily lectures by senior researchers rounded up the program, during which the Summer School participants touched on topics like biodiversity governance, biodiversity data management, team working, big experiments, and the development of a big data platform and had the chance for mutual exchange with the lecturers. The excursion invited the group into the Leipziger Neuseenland, where geographer Ronny Schmidt from Leipzig University illustrated the restauration of a former mining landscape from a pedological, geological, ecological and sociological point of view.
