Scientists advance IPBES Assessment during author convention

The expert group for the Regional Assessment on Europe and Central Asia of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) convened for its second authors meeting. About 100 participants met in Zadar, Croatia, from 5 to 9 September 2016. Among them were members and employees of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv):· Matthias Schröter, Postdoctoral researcher at the Department Ecosystem Services of the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and iDiv, lead author for Chapter 2 of the assessment, works on quantifying nature’s benefits to people· Carlos Guerra, postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Biological Conservation at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and iDiv, contributes to Chapter 3, works on identifying the links between biodiversity and ecosystem services· iDiv consortium member Irene Ring (TU Dresden, International Institute Zittau), coordinating lead author for Chapter 6, works on biodiversity and ecosystem service governance and decision-making· Marten Winter, scientific coordinator of iDiv’s synthesis centre sDiv, lead author for Chapter 5, works on gaps and uncertainties of various aspects of integrated modelsDuring their meeting in Zadar, the members of the interdisciplinary group discussed the progress of the assessment report for Europe and Central Asia. Furthermore, external review comments were addressed during the meeting, and an agenda for future activities was set.One of the central missions of IPBES is to provide comprehensive, policy-relevant assessments on the status and trends of biodiversity and the benefits people receive from ecosystems. These reports comply with direct requests from policy-makers within this international initiative, which is currently mandated and supported by 125 governments.
