On Monday the 26
th of November MIE welcomed class 12 of the Louise-Otto-Peters-school from Leipzig to the molecular lab. During their time in the lab, the students got an insight in molecular genetic techniques by extracting DNA, performing a PCR procedure and running a gel electrophoresis.
Two groups studied the response of field mustard (
Brassica rapa) and tomato (
Solanum lycopersicum) to attacks by cabbage root flies (
Delia radicum) or parasitic nematodes (
Meloidogyne incognita). One group identified nematode infestations in tomato plants and two other groups looked at the presence of endosymbionts such as
Rickettsia and
Wolbachia in lacewings (
Chrysoperla carnea) and cabbage root flies. Thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of Frau Starke and all students the day was a great success!
